INVESTIGATION OF CULTURAL HERITAGE IN ROMANIA
PAST AND PERSPECTIVES

Established in 1974, the Romanian System for the Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage on a scientific basis.

In Romania there are three professional categories: conservators, restorers, investigators, chemists, physicists and biologists. In recent years, measures have been taken to train a new generation of investigators in all three specializations. The most important techniques that they use are pXRF X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD).

The Zonal Restoration Laboratory has been operating within the Banat National Museum since 1975. With the re-establishment of the research sector in recent years, it became the first Laboratory in the western region of Romania that employs a chemist, who is in training, and a biologist.

The technical equipment currently includes a pXRF Brucker Tracer 5.i, a Zeiss Imager A2 m material research microscope, and soon a Zeiss Axiolab 5 biological investigation microscope.

In addition, we initiated a project for a Center for Conservation, Restoration and Systemic Research of Cultural Heritage.

As national cultural heritage is an element of national security, the preservation of material and immaterial memory is a priority of cultural policies on both national and local levels.
