The tympanum above the main entrance of the Museum of Fine Arts holds life-size plaster casts of the sculptures decorating the west pediment of the Temple of Zeus at Olympia. The scene depicts the battle between the Lapiths and the Centaurs, which broke out at the wedding of Peirithoös, the Lapith king, when the drunken Centaurs attempted to abduct the Lapith women. The central figure of the group is the god Apollo, invisible to those embroiled in the fight. His presence creates order amidst the chaotic scene.
