The painting is a partial copy of the full-length portrait by Anthony van Dyck in Florence, Uffizi, which until recently was consistently identified as the likeness of Marguerite de Lorraine (1615-1672), the wife of Gaston d’Orléans. The original was probably painted around 1634-1635. In the version in Budapest the sitter is reduced to slightly more than half-length and the space at the right and particularly the left is limited. The corsage on her chest in the original is absent here.
