A bearded man draped in a mantle stands on the right. He holds a scraper (strigilis) in his lowered left hand, he was thus commemorated as an athlete. He holds the hand of the woman opposite him, probably his wife, signalling their togetherness even beyond the grave. There is a younger woman between them, perhaps their daughter. A servant stands behind the back of the chair, watching from outside the family circle. As the engraved inscription attests the stele preserves the memory of a woman named Damasistrate, it is thus the seated woman who passed away. Without the inscription, we could also think of the man as the deceased.
