The painting recalls the composition of Sebastiano del Piombos work depicting Christ Carrying the Cross. The original was commissioned directly from Scipione Pulzone around 1581-1583 by Marcantonio Colonna, viceroy of Sicily, and the painting was presented as a gift to Mateo Vázguez, secretary to King Philip II of Spain. The composition resonated with Spanish religious spirituality, and it became hugely popular on the Iberian Peninsula. This is indicated by the factthat Cardinal Ferdinando de’ Medici wanted. to send another version of the painting to Spain, and by the number of known variations and copies that were probably produced by Spanish artists. Due to the high quality of the painting in Budapest, researchers believe that this is the first, autograph replica of the original work. El Greco also painted this theme on several occasions, and he may even have utilised this work by Pulzone as his model.
