The so-called Gnadenstuhl (Throne of Mercy) type of representation depicts the Holy Trinity, with God the Father on his throne, the dove of the Holy Spirit, and the crucified Christ. It is derived from Byzantine portrayals of Mary as the Throne of Wisdom, and it remained an iconographical type until as late as the eighteenth century. The statue follows this type of representation, as shown – despite the poor state of the work – by the characteristic pose of God the Father and the dove sitting on his shoulder. His hand and the crucified Christ held in front of his body have been lost. Stylistically, the work shows a close affinity with the statues of the Altar of the Apostles in Saint Michael’s Church, Folkärna (Sweden).
