The marble bust, originally owned by Paul Arndt, a classical archaeologist and private collector from Munich, entered the museum’s collection as an ancient sculpture in 1908. The head, originating from Florence, had been repaired with plaster: the man’s narrow, pointed nose was unfamiliar to the spirit of both antiquity and the Florentine baroque. Therefore, the work, which was subsequently attributed to the circle of Giovanni da Bologna (1529–1608) and transferred to the Collection of Sculptures, was freed from the plaster addition. The restoration of the bust, which had been kept in storage for decades in an incomplete state, took place in 2022. During the process, new technologies were employed. The artwork was 3D scanned, and digital plans were created to reconstruct the missing parts. Following the digital modelling, the replacements were produced through 3D printing using PLA filament material, a technical solution applied for the first time at the Museum of Fine Arts. After the fixing and retouching of the new parts, the marble bust now presents a unified artistic appearance once again.
