On view Star Fortress (Komárom), The Archaic Period of Greek Sculpture (650–480 BC): Kore and Kouros Figures, Gallery II

This head from the statue of a youth illustrates how Greek sculptors modelled the human face at the end of the Archaic period, in the late sixth century BC. The face is roundish. The long, wavy hair is arched over the forehead in spiral curls, and is turned back from the neck in a roll. The eye is almond shaped, the bowed lips show the characteristic archaic smile. The statue in Berlin was carved from the best-quality marble, quarried on the island of Paros. The findspot of the statue is unknown; we do not know where it was made, or whom it represents. It dates to the last phase of the production of kouros statues.
