The female face is framed by locks of hair wriggling like snakes; two intertwined snakes appear below the chin, and two outstretched wings at the temples. The excavations conducted at the Temple of Venus and Roma in Rome yielded six fragmentary marble Gorgonheads in 1813, and three more pieces were found a few years later. All belonged to the decoration of the frieze. One example was bought by Ferdinand Franz Wallraf, an art collector from Köln, and it was later acquired by the local museum. It suffered great damage in World War II, but a restoration was fortunately possible based on an earlier plaster cast.
