On the left there is a bearded man in a short dress and mantle, who is crowned by another bearded figure wearing armour, and leaning on a shield. A female figure stands on the right, wearing chiton and himation. Her raised right hand may once have held a sceptre, torch, or spear indicated with paint. The two figures on the right are taller than the person being crowned, they are probably gods honouring a man. The central figure with the shield has often been identified with Ares. The original relief had an inscription, which shed light on the purpose of the piece.
