Following the campaigns of the Macedonian king Alexander the Great (336—323 BC), the direct influence of Greek culture reached the area of present-day Pakistan. In the region called Gandhara, a unique artistic style evolved from the interaction between Greek and Indian culture. From a Graeco-Roman perspective, the relief shows a Dionysiac scene. One may recognise the stout figure of Silenos riding a lion. Behind him, a man (a satyr?) pours wine from a wineskin into a vessel, while his companion treads grapes in a tub. The scene, originally carved from gray schist, also had a local interpretation, which — for now — is hidden from us.
