The full-figure statue recalls the so-called Beautiful Madonna-type of the Virgin Mary and was built in the corner of a building functioned as a guest house from 1685. This corner house (built in the fifteenth century) was part of the so-called Rotes Roß hostel, on the Weinmarkt square, in Nuremberg.
The cast formed part of the gift given to the museum in 1907 by Elsa Göschel from Nuremberg, who married the Hungarian Gábor Durkó and moved to Budapest. The cast was made by Elsa Göschel’s father, Johann, a stone carver and cast maker in the German city. The copy was exhibited in the Romanesque Hall. Between 1982 and 2013 it has been deposited in the Institute for the Blind, in Budapest.
