The goddess wears a long, thick robe (peplos) tied with a belt around the waist. She holds ears of grain in her right hand, and raises her left hand, which may have held a sceptre. The statue thus depicts the goddess Demeter— Ceres, but this was not necessarily its original interpretation. Both arms are modern, and so are the objects they hold, which means we do not know what the statue originally had in her hands. It could also have been a representation of Hera, holding a libation dish (phiale). The monumental statue created in the early Imperial period probably followed a Greek statue from the Classical period.
