The statue represents St Anne with the Virgin and the child Jesus. The group of the Virgin and Child in the lap of St Anne is a reduced version of larger Spanish Madonna statues of the late 13th century; a Madonna in the Metropolitan Museum of New York, produced between 1280 and 1300 and coming from north-eastern Spain, provides a close analogy. On this basis it is possible to identify eastern Spain, possibly Catalonia, as the region where this statue is likely to have been carved. The traces of paint are contemporary.
