The Moulin Rouge, the famous Parisian nightclub, is the scene of numerous paintings and drawings by Toulouse-Lautrec; it was in the Parisian night-life, in the cafés, musical thaters and nightclubs that the artist felt really at home. On this snapshot-like drawing he depicted ladies entering the nightclub with expectation and searching glances, and a man of bohemian appearance just leaving. The regulars sitting on the gallery in the background are also typical figures of Paris by night.
