The lion brings a bull down in a naos-shaped niche, with a wreath, pomegranate, writing utensils and a writing board below – these are the attributes of a strong, educated, and successful man. Similar stelae were produced in the valley of the river Hermos (today’s Gediz) on the boundary of Mysia and Phrygia. The Greek inscription relates that the stele was erected by the wife and children of the deceased in the year 190 of the local era. This corresponds to 159/160 AD, because in this region the battle of Actium (31 BC) was used as a starting date from which to calculate time.
Marble analyses have shown that the stele was made of Turkish marble.
